Good morning all,
I mailed out the band camp letter last week, but for those who might have misplaced it or may have lost it through the mail, here's a copy for you:
10 June 2009
Dear Volunteer Band members,
I hope you are off to a great and memorable summer! This letter is an update to you about the upcoming school year and your involvement with the Volunteer Band. Can you believe that we have only 40 days until band camp?!
Attached to this letter you will find a schedule for camp. All scheduled meeting times are mandatory. If you have an issue, you need to contact me as soon as possible. Also attached is a list of dates. These dates, though not complete, give you an idea of the time commitment for being a part of the Volunteer Band. If you have a conflict, please contact me immediately. Finally, you will find attached a complete list of all the members of the Volunteer Band. We chose this year to include sixth graders as a part of our auxiliary percussion. We look forward to having these students participate in band!
You will receive an invoice from the Band Boosters in July concerning costs for band. Please have your payment for camp paid by FRIDAY, JULY 24th. The Shoe man will be at Starkville Academy on Thursday, July 30th at 2:15. New marching shoes are $34 and must be paid IN CASH ONLY. No checks allowed! Any new pants orders will also be done on that day.
I am looking forward to the fall marching season and my second year as director at Starkville Academy. This past year was truly amazing; let’s see if we can make this year even better! If you have any questions, concerns, comments, or complaints, feel free to email or call me.
With Pride,
Hunter Corhern

CAMP ESSENTIALS
- All students must be PRESENT at all scheduled rehearsals during band camp in order to be a part of the Volunteer Band in the fall. Consult the band director for issues.
- All students must have TENNIS SHOES and SOCKS at outdoor rehearsals.
NO EXCEPTIONS!
- Students should also have WATER or GATORADE to drink at outdoor rehearsals. The band will have some water to drink or to refill bottles, but we cannot properly hydrate all students for Mississippi July weather. Students may also have a SNACK during rehearsals if they have cases of weak spells or low blood sugar.
- Despite how well you may tan, bring SUNSCREEN to camp. SUNGLASSES and HATS are also recommended. Long pants and heavy jackets are not recommended. Please think ahead about your attire!
- INSTRUMENTS are also required at all outdoor rehearsals.
- Lunch will not be provided for the band. Students who cannot drive can arrange for other students to transport them to lunch or can bring their own lunch. There will be adult supervision in the band hall during lunch hour for students.
TO PREPARE FOR CAMP
- Spend time outside during sunlight hours before camp to prepare for the heat.
- Drink fluids throughout the day the week before camp so that you are properly hydrated.
- Eat a good breakfast and lunch! Many cases of heat-related incidents can be prevented if students eat before rehearsals. On the flip side, think wisely about what you eat before practice!
- If you haven’t touched your horn since you brought it home for the summer, now would be a good time to make sure all the slides or valves are working or if the buttons are stuck. If you have a problem with your horn, we can fix it now. Don’t wait until camp to fix your horn!
- All students should have their show music. While you are not required to have it memorized for camp, it would be pertinent to play through the music before camp. If nothing else, you should mark all accidentals so that you can avoid easy mistakes.
- Take a moment to see if your SHOES and PANTS still fit. If they don’t, bring them the first Friday of camp so that you can sell them to another band student.

Last Weekly Update
Good morning!
As this is the last week of school, this will also be the last regular Weekly Update. Any information concerning band camp and other information will be sent out either by email or through regular mail as well as being posted on the blog.
- Tonight at 6:00 pm, there will be an informal meeting for uprising seventh graders and any other new band members. This will be an opportunity to ask questions about the upcoming season and what to expect concerning costs, dates, and the like.
- Congratulations to the girls that participated in Guard Camp last week! They had a great performance Friday night for their parents. We should add a few more guard members for next year's marching band.
- Congratulations to Thomas Boydstun for making Drum Major and for Jordan Keasler for making Assistant Drum Major. The two participants were very impressive overall Friday with their work. We're looking forward to having a great season with these two in charge!
- There will be a graduation run-through for the seniors and for the band on Friday, May 15th. We will be bused over and back in the morning for the rehearsal. Students are expected to be at Newell-Grissom at 6:15 pm Friday evening for graduation. Prelude music will begin at 6:40 pm and the ceremony will start at 7:00 pm. After graduation, if there are any parents or students who would be willing to help transport percussion equipment back to the band hall, I would be most grateful!
Attire for graduation will be a blue or white collared shirt (no polos) and dress pants for both women and men. Ties and coats are optional.
- For students interested in trying out for Lions Band next year, the auditions will be in November instead of the usual January. This is because the Lions Band will be traveling to Sidney, Australia the following summer and will need the additional time for fundraising. This means you have to be ready EXTRA early!
- For those of you whose students have not told you about the band trip, we will be traveling to Richmond, Virginia next April to compete and to attend the Paramount Kings Dominion. Details concerning travel arrangements and cost will be announced as they are confirmed.
Thank you all for a great year. I have truly been blessed to be around a band and a band booster organization that cares so much about each other and what the band wishes to accomplish. I hope all of you have a safe summer! Students will receive their marching music this week before they leave for the summer. A summer mail out concerning camp and performance dates will be out in mid-June. If you have any questions or comments or suggestions as for next year, feel free to call or email me at any time.
With Pride,
Mr. Corhern

Coming to the end...
Good morning,
It has been a crazy semester, and now we're at the end of it! What a journey it has been. I apologize for not posting sooner, but like I said, we've been going all out here...
- As one last reminder, the Volunteer Band will be playing at graduation on Friday, May 15th, at Newell-Grissom. We will have a practice Friday morning at Newell-Grissom, but students will be back in time for their 7th period exam. If your family is having an issue concerning graduation, please contact me so that we can make arrangements. This is not an optional performance for band members!
- I announced to the band students about our marching band show for next fall. As of right now, I have opened up nominations for a show title and given the students a chance to design the show t-shirt. The working title that we are using is "Volunteer Vigilantes". The music is the following:
The Magnificent Seven
The Dark Knight
Robin Hood: Prince of Thieves
If you have any suggestions for titles, please feel free to contact me. We are finalizing plans this next week, so hurry!
- Guard Camp is underway here this week, and the instructors have been extremely impressed with the level of talent being displayed. There will be an open exhibition Friday, May 8th at 5:30 to see what these youngs ladies have learned this week. Though this is not mandatory, I encourage everyone to attend! The exhibition will be less than thirty minutes.
- Next Monday night, May 11th, at 6:00 pm in the band hall, we will have a meeting for uprising 7th graders and for new band parents to discuss costs and dates for the next year. If you are a parent of a future 7th grader or new to the band, we encourage you coming!
- The MPSA Band Directors will be meeting this Saturday, May 9th, in Pearl to discuss plans for next year. I should have dates for MPSA Festival and Clinic by next Monday for next year's plans!
Thank you all again for all the hard work you put into this band. We are truly blessed to be where we are and to have the talents and resources that we do. Hope you have a great day!
With Pride,
Mr. Corhern

Great Job!
WOW! That was a great concert last night! Thank you to the students for their work and preparation to help this concert come together. Thank you to the administration for their support and sacrifice.
I especially want to thank you, the parents, for all your hard work. None of what happened last night would be possible without your support for your children and for the friends of your children. My job is made easier because of what you do.
I have had several questions about the Jazz Band performing at the MSU Jazz Festival on Friday. Here are some answers as best as I can give them:
- Students will need to wear their blue SA Band shirt (tucked in, everyone!) with blue jeans and shoes (any shoes will be fine). Remind them to wear a belt please!
- Students will report to first period on Friday. They will be dismissed from there to go to the band hall to leave.
- The students will be transported by van and by my personal vehicle. Coach Morgan has agreed to be the driver of the van. We will leave the school at 8:30.
- The jazz band will perform at 9:20 in the morning. Parents are welcomed to attend.
- The band will return to school in time for third lunch 5th Period. They will all eat third lunch. They will return to their regular schedule 6th period.
As always, if you have questions or comments, feel free to email me or to call me.

Hang On To Your Hats!
Good morning all!
It has been a very crazy hectic morning already! This week will be trying, but we should have a good time while getting to Saturday. Here is what is going on:
- Tomorrow morning, at 9:30, the Starkville Academy Volunteer Band will perform a small portion of their concert to the elementary students in the gym. I had originally thought it would be today, but that was a misunderstanding on my part. Just as a clarification: they will NOT be wearing uniforms for this performance.
- Tomorrow evening, the Volunteer Band Spring concert will begin at 6:30 pm with the 5th grade band. The Volunteer Band WILL be wearing uniforms for this performance. Girls will be allowed to wear their hair down for this performance. The Jazz Band will need to report at 5:00 pm for a quick rehearsal before the concert. The Volunteer Band will report at 5:45 for warm-up. The 6th grade band will meet at 6:00 pm and the 5th grade will meet at 6:15. It should be a great concert and we hope that you make it out!
- The Starkville Academy Jazz Band will leave SA at 8:30 to attend the MSU Jazz Festival. We will perform at 9:20 am in the MSU Band Hall. After our performance, we will stay to watch the other jazz bands perform. We will return to the school around 12:45 and eat lunch in the cafeteria.
- Drumline rehearsals will continue on Thursday afternoons from 3:15 to 4:15. Make every effort to attend!
- Friday evening will be the SA Band Banquet. This will be the band's gathering to salute the seniors and the band's accomplishments for the year. Students were supposed to turn in their checks for tickets and give a headcount of attendance. A large majority of students turned in their forms, but not everyone has done so. If you forgot to give your student money for the banquet, please give me a call TODAY so that I can pass that on to Mrs. Keasler. We must tell the caterer by 4:00 pm today how many to expect to show.
- Next Monday, the band students will present their final project for band. I reminded them again today to bring their projects. This counts for 25% of their grade for this semester! Make sure your student is doing their work for this project.
- SA Guard Camp and Drum Major tryouts are rapidly approaching. Make sure you are prepared for these great events! We still only have two participants signed up for Drum Major tryouts. I encourage everyone who thinks they might want to be drum major in the future to try out this year for experience!
I look forward to seeing all of you tomorrow night!

Weekly Update
Good morning all!
I am sure that your students are greatly appreciating their day out of school as am I. It gives us a chance to catch our breath one last time before taking the final plunge to the end of the semester. The next few weeks will be VERY busy, so grab your hats and hold on!
- Because of play practice we WILL NOT have Jazz band practice Tuesday night. However, since we need the practice, we will instead rehearse Tuesday between second and third periods. Rhythm section, please be sure to bring guitars, bass, drums, etc. to the band hall on Tuesday morning. We will be doing the same thing next week with jazz band except that it will be during band period after the concert.
- For the band concert, the band will be wearing BAND UNIFORMS. If students have medals they wish to display, they may wear those as well. Plan on leaving the uniform jackets at school after the concert so that they may be washed and put on inventory for the summer. Band pants are to return home with students. Parents, please double-check your student's uniforms as some had dirty spots at contest two weeks ago.
- While we are talking about uniforms, this would be a good time to plan ahead to see if your child needs to buy new pants or sell old pants. We will be giving a questionnaire out toward the end of the year to see if you need to sell pants to another band student and to see if you need to purchase another blue generic band shirt. This last year was a mandatory sell since we were not sure who would need them, but this fall we will take into consideration those who only need to purchase the band show shirt.
- Just as a friendly reminder, we will continue to have drumline practice after school on Thursday.
- As another friendly reminder, parents, make sure your students are working on their final projects. The first groups will be presenting their project two weeks from today! Since they have had all semester to work on these projects, I will not accept any late presentations.
- I want to say thank you to all the parents and students who contributed pictures for the band video at the band banquet. Sadly, we did not have a huge turn-out for pictures. I understand that many parents do not have the opportunity or the means to take pictures of their students. We will work with what we have and do our best to have every member of the band represented. To those who were able to give, thank you.
Let's all have a great week!
With Pride,
Mr. Corhern
